The CEO of Trump Company's Inexplicable Meeting With a Leader of the Balkans Raises the Potential of New War

Former congressman Devin Nunes, who is in charge of Truth Social’s parent firm, visited North Macedonia amid the ongoing struggle by former President Trump to reshape American foreign policy.

Devin Nunes, the CEO of Trump Media and a former congressman from California, landed in the North Macedonian capital of Skopje earlier this summer.

He was there to discuss business with a small group of other CEOs from North America. However, they weren’t there to have a meeting with representatives of a different business. A senior government representative from Macedonia met them at the private aircraft’s tarmac. They were then driven from the airport by a police escort. They were there to meet with the recently elected prime minister of the Balkan country.

The head of the nation’s conservative nationalist party, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, provided little details about the meeting’s objectives at the time. He said to local journalists covering the meeting at the time in the Balkans, “For now, I would not reveal this type of details.”

Accompanying Nunes on the trip was Chris Pavlovski, CEO of Rumble, a video streaming startup and close partner of Trump Media, who said in a recent earnings call that he had spoken with the Macedonian government about a cloud technology services agreement.

The meeting marks the first time that the former president’s media organization has had direct contact with a foreign government, in this case one that is looking to work with the Trump administration in the future on a variety of diplomatic, economic, and security-related topics.

The prime minister took pride in the political connections of the visiting group during his remarks in public. “Two of the closest associates of former US President Donald Trump,” he said of Nunes and another participant.

Ethics experts have cautioned that Trump’s significant ownership of Trump Media and its Twitter-like platform, Truth Social, offers chances for influence as he seeks reelection a second time. Politically motivated advertisers, suppliers, or investors may utilize their commercial ties to the social media company to pressure a Trump administration to provide them preferential treatment.

When asked specific questions, such as what part the company may play in such a deal or whether one has been reached, a Trump Media spokeswoman remained silent.

“The ProPublica geniuses, much to our dismay, have unearthed Devin Nunes’ secret scheme to recreate Alexander the Great’s kingdom and get Chris Pavlovski named King of Macedon,” the spokesperson’s statement said.

Rumble, the Macedonian prime minister, and Trump campaign spokespeople did not answer queries.

Throughout his presidency, Trump faced worries that foreign nations might try to win over him by doing business with his establishments, such as his hotel in Washington, D.C. Trump’s firms engaged in multiple international transactions even after his lawyer promised not to take on any new foreign ventures while in office. Should the Macedonian government strike an agreement with Trump Media or its associates and Trump wins another presidential election, this might be yet another example of how his personal financial interests collide with U.S. foreign policy.

A U.S. government official with experience in Eastern European affairs stated, “They want an in with Trump,” adding that North Macedonia looks to the United States for assistance in diplomatic problems with its neighbors. “We have a great deal of leverage.”

Trump’s over 60% ownership in Trump Media, which was founded just a few years ago in 2021, now accounts for a considerable portion of his personal wealth.

Two other prominent members in Trump’s inner circle accompanied Nunes on the July trip: Howard Lutnick, a Wall Street executive and Trump donor who assisted Rumble in going public and was recently appointed as co-chair of Trump’s transition planning team, and Pavlovski, the CEO of Rumble.

Canadian-born Pavlovski, whose parents are from North Macedonia, has long been an advocate for his native nation. Additionally, he is a co-founder of an IT outsourcing company that has worked with Trump Media and employs software professionals in North Macedonia. According to earlier reports from ProPublica, Trump Media has an agreement with Pavlovski’s outsourcing company in the nation and has obtained a special visa for a Macedonian programmer who serves as the company’s chief technology officer.
