PARIS 2024 PARALYMPIC GAMES OPENING CEREMONY

The first-ever Paralympic Games will take place in Paris on Wednesday, August 28. The event will kick off with a grand Opening Ceremony in the city center of France.

4,400 Paralympic competitors from 184 delegations will gather at the Champs-Elysées and Place de la Concorde at 20:00 local time on August 29 to commemorate the opening of an 11-day competition.

Artistic Director for Ceremonies spanning the Olympic and Paralympic Games of Paris 2024, Thomas Jolly, stated that the spectacle will “showcase the Paralympic athletes and the values that they embody.”

Jolly predicts “performances that have never been seen before” in a “spectacle that will unite spectators and television audiences worldwide around the unique spirit of the Paralympic Games,” characterizing the idea as “first and foremost a magnificent source of inspiration”.

Once more, the event will take place outside of a stadium, with athletes walking down the renowned road. Thousands of fans will watch as the celebration and formal opening of the Paralympic Games take place at the famed square.

“What a fantastic moment for our athletes, who will be a part of a historic Opening Ceremony, on the most famous avenue in the world, surrounded by all the charm of Paris,” exclaimed Jitske Visser, a competitor at Paris 2024, Paralympic wheelchair basketball medallist, president of the IPC Athletes’ Commission, and herself.

“This ceremony at the heart of the city is a strong symbol illustrating our ambition to capitalise on our country hosting its first-ever Paralympic Games to position the issue of inclusion for people with disabilities at the heart of our society,” said Tony Estanguet, president of Paris 2024.

Wheelchair rugby is a fan favorite. The mixed-gender preliminary rounds begin at 10:30 and include a tantalising match between Great Britain and Australia.

After finishing in fourth position at Tokyo 2020, Ryley Batt looks to lead his Australian team back to the top of the podium after winning in London 2012 and Rio 2016.

In the meantime, the USA and Canada square off at 12:30 in a North America match, with Chuck Aoki vying for the top slot after two silvers and a bronze. The crowd is undoubtedly ready to rock the Champ de Mars Arena to its core once more as hosts France takes on Denmark.
