A Real Government Shutdown Could Be Caused by a False Story

Republicans are eager to battle over the imaginary problem of large-scale voting by noncitizens.

Real government shutdown false story trump

Good night! We’re focusing on Capitol Hill tonight because there may be the beginnings of a government shutdown before of the election. Carl Hulse, our lead Washington correspondent, is here to provide an explanation. Next, we’ll take a brief look at an odd picture taken by Doug Mills. — Bidgood Jess

Republicans all throughout the nation have been promoting the unverified theory that a wave of undocumented immigrants is about to cast illegal votes and tip the election in favor of the Democrats for months.

Even while this is a misleading story meant to appease the hard-right base of Republicans, it has the potential to seriously disrupt Capitol Hill in the days leading up to the election.

However, House Republicans intend to use the concept as a weapon against Democrats in their battle for government financing by the deadline of September 30.

It remains to be seen whether the move will provide those Republicans the political clout they want and how far they are prepared to go in order to acquire it. A government shutdown could be necessary to find out.

A showdown over shutdown

There are many examples of previous shutdown confrontations that like this one: Republicans and Democrats are unable to come to an agreement on spending and run out of time. Republicans bet that Democrats will back down if they refuse to give in to their demands for concessions on a politically sensitive topic, in this case, addressing illegal immigration and voting. This is done in exchange for additional federal spending. Democrats scoff, betting that the GOP will take the fallout for imposing an unpopular government shutdown.

That’s how things transpired in 2018, when Senate Democrats hurried to end a shutdown dispute over immigration out of concern that it would harm their political standing.

Speaker Mike Johnson is hoping for a similar result this time around, as he is dealing with recurring demands from his right wing for a budget fight with Democrats. Republicans unveiled a package on Friday night that they intend to discuss next week. It includes a six-month spending extension and a provision requiring Americans to provide proof of U.S. citizenship at the time of voter registration.

There is currently no evidence of widespread illegal voting by noncitizens, and it is already illegal for them to cast ballots in federal elections. Nevertheless, Johnson believes that the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, also referred to as the voter registration law, is a political winner.

This year, the speaker posed the question, “Should Americans and Americans alone determine the outcome of American elections?” “Or should we let illegal immigrants and foreigners choose who represents us in the Senate, People’s House, and White House?”

“A problem seeking a solution”

It may not seem like the best political move, given the mess House Republicans have created over the last two years, to force the government into a shutdown or to put it dangerously close to one only weeks before an election. Republicans in competitive districts also wish to steer clear of any suggestion of a shutdown.

But if influential Republicans believe they can make enough political capital on the fallacious notion that voting by noncitizens in elections is a serious issue, then it might come to that.

On Friday, Democrats did not take long to reject the Republican budget proposal. They claim that the GOP is fabricating the issue of noncitizen voting in order to incite voter xenophobia and anti-immigrant sentiment while discouraging potential Democratic supporters who are lawfully qualified to vote from registering.

Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, told reporters this week at the Capitol, “This is a solution looking for a problem.” “There is no proof that immigrants without legal status cast ballots. Voter registration is a difficult task in and of itself.
