This year, India will celebrate its 78th Independence Day. The country became independent on August 15, 1947, and the first anniversary of that historic day was celebrated a year later, in 1948—so making a nuanced distinction, India will celebrate its 78th Independence Day and simultaneously mark the 77th anniversary of independence as Inependece day.
The 78th Independence Day is going to be celebrated with much fanfare across the country, from schools and workplaces to housing societies. This time, the third edition of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign started on August 9 as the cardinal constituent program for the celebrations. “The aim of the initiative is to instil a sense of patriotism and national pride when every Indian hoists the national flag,” he said at an event here in the national capital on Thursday. Citizens are also encouraged to capture a selfie with the flag and share it on the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ portal.
He called upon countrymen to turn this campaign into an important mass movement. The PM showed his support to the initiative by changing his profile picture to the national flag and asked others to do so too.
As part of the Independence Day celebrations, the Ministry of Defence has introduced the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (A Tree in the Name of Mother) campaign, complementing the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative. This campaign, launched by Prime Minister Modi on World Environment Day, June 5, 2024, is a nationwide effort to plant 1.5 million trees, symbolizing India’s dedication to environmental sustainability. The initiative is being driven by the three Armed Services, along with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), defence public sector undertakings, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), and Sainik Schools.
