Breaking News, Live Updates for August 12, 2024: Global Outage Strikes Google; Search, Gmail, and YouTube Disrupted Worldwide
The latest to join in this list of sorts of an “internet pandemic,“ as some people are calling worldwide IT global outages, is Google. It joined the list today when users from all parts of the world started complaining about not being able to access their Gmail, Google Search, YouTube, or any other service related to Google. Ironically, users took to social media to report these issues despite facing error messages on their screens on August 12 (IST).
Downdetector, a website that keeps tabs on online service interruptions, almost immediately detected the spike in complaints. Reports began surging around 9 a.m. ET. It’s unclear at this point what is causing this latest wave of global outages, but already it has turned out to be quite a significant disruption, particularly as many in the U.S. were just starting their workday. One user, @CraigMason, joked in a tweet, “Debugging why the Internet isn’t working at the office. oh, turns out it’s just @Google that’s down.”.
Reports of Google outages surged according to Downdetector, with its heat map indicating that Los Angeles and New York City were the most affected. Other cities, like Houston, San Francisco, Dallas, Boston, and Chicago, also featured yellow on the map.
Of the problems most commonly reported by the American population, 57% were attributed to search issues, 31% indicated trouble accessing information on the website, and 11% were linked to Google Drive.
While some claimed their issues were resolved, others remained in the puddle, continuing to update their issues. “Google services here in the UK seem to be struggling, DNS issues, Google search down intermittently,” a user in the UK reported.
Other complaints from users of the platform included:
- It looks like something big happened just now and broke DNS, Google Cloud, and some other services with it.”
- Can’t get the web login page. It just keeps refreshing the login page in Chrome, and in Edge, it just keeps a blank page.”
- This #google search engine is not working for me. I had to switch to Bing.”
- Design and engineering are really things Melon Global needs to work on in their website. Security code/captcha constantly throws an error on Safari but works when I switch on Chrome or Edge.”
- Google won’t load at all. Nothing is working.
