Films that explored Indira Gandhi's life, from Emergency to Aandhi.

The upcoming movie Emergency, starring Kangana Ranaut, is centered on the sinister chapter of the same name and is mired in censor board controversy. However, did you know that politicians opposed numerous political drama films, particularly those that centered on the lives of former prime ministers, even before the Emergency?

Two such domains where intense drama is anticipated are politics and film. In the film industry, producing films with political themes is not a new trend. The movie Emergency starring Kangana Ranaut is the new name added to this. However, this movie has been rescheduled owing to intense controversy. However, Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency is not the only movie that has been pushed back because of political commotion. Prior to this, there had been numerous Hindi films of similar type that were influenced by politics and despised by political parties or groups, particularly the biopic of the former prime minister. Let’s examine certain movies that centered on the life narrative of the previous prime minister and weren’t well received by organizations or viewers.

Shabana Azmi, Raj Babbar, and Surekha Sikri starred in the controversial political drama Kissa Kursi Ka. Director Amrit Nahata saw the film through to completion in 1974. However, its distribution was delayed because of the emergency declaration in 1975. The authorities at the time watched this film during the emergency and requested that it be altered. Its prints were also taken away. Kissa Kursi Ka was released in 1978 in some way. However, there was a lot of debate regarding this movie’s political satire.

Aandhi

Aandhi, starring Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen, was also prepared for distribution during the emergency. However, it was alleged that Gulzar’s film misrepresented the marriage of Indira Gandhi, the prime minister at the time, and her husband. However, Aandhi’s release was made possible by the fall of Indira’s government in 1977.

Sarkar Indu

Prior to Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, the tale of the Emergency era of 1975 was portrayed on the big screen in Madhur Bhandarkar’s film Indu Sarkar. This film was utilized for a great deal of political mileage. The Congress party was adamantly against the movie. Indu Sarkar, on the other hand, was released in theaters in 2017 without having its release date delayed.

In an emergency

in September 6, Kangana Ranaut’s flick Emergency was scheduled to be released in theaters. However, the censor board did not approve this film, and several Sikh community members petitioned the court about the Emergency. There are claims that the movie presents the Sikh community’s image incorrectly. As of right now, Emergency’s release date has been permanently pushed back.

A number of celebrities have portrayed Indira Gandhi in other Bollywood movies, including Raid, Sam Bahadur, and Bellbottom. But because they were merely in supporting and good roles, and because of their plot, the movies avoided becoming mired in controversy.
