After 6 more hostages are killed in Gaza, Israelis protest and a workers' strike is called.
Jerusalem — Following the discovery of six more hostages dead in Gaza on Sunday night, distraught and enraged Israelis took to the streets, yelling “Now! Now!” and demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu negotiate a cease-fire with Hamas in order to free the other detainees.
The Histadrut, the biggest labor union in Israel, put further pressure on the government by announcing a nationwide walkout for Monday, the first since the Hamas bombing that began the war on October 7. The primary airport in the nation, banking, and healthcare are among the key economic sectors that the walkout seeks to shut down or interfere with.
It was anticipated that thousands of Israelis would demonstrate. For over 11 months of fighting, many hold Netanyahu responsible for the lack of a cease-fire. The talks have been dragging on for several months. The Israeli army has stated that a deal is the only option to bring about a significant return, while also acknowledging the challenge of freeing the dozens of hostages who are still held.
Thousands of demonstrators, some of whom were in tears, gathered outside Netanyahu’s office in Jerusalem. One of them called himself Amos. “I’m crying the cry of humanity,” he said.
According to the military, all six captives were slain just before Israeli forces showed up. Netanyahu declared, “Whoever murders hostages doesn’t want a deal,” blaming the violent Hamas organization for the impasse in the talks.
At a music event in the southern region of Israel, militants took 23-year-old Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin and four other captives. During the raid, a grenade caused the Berkeley, California native to lose a portion of his left arm. After he was seen alive in a Hamas-issued video in April, there were fresh demonstrations in Israel.
The three dead captives, who were also seized from the festival, were identified by the army as Ori Danino, 25, Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Almog Sarusi, 27, and Alexander Lobanov, 33. The sixth, forty-year-old Carmel Gat, was kidnapped from the neighboring farming village of Be’eri.
The remains, according to the army, were found in a tunnel in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, around half a mile (or one kilometer) from where another captive was saved alive the previous week.
Israeli forces discovered the remains several dozen meters (yards) below ground while “ongoing combat” was taking place, according to military spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani. However, the tunnel itself was not the scene of a firefight. Without a doubt, Hamas killed them, he stated.
In exchange for an end to the conflict, the evacuation of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the release of several Palestinian prisoners—including well-known militants—Hamas has offered to free the hostages.
Senior Hamas leader Izzat al-Rishq stated that if Israel had agreed to a cease-fire proposal sponsored by the United States, which Hamas claimed to have agreed to in July, the hostages would still be alive.
More indignation followed the start of the captive funerals. An Israeli flag was draped over Sarusi’s corpse. His mother Nira claimed, “You were abandoned on and on, daily, hour after hour, 331 days.” “You and a great number of lovely, pure souls. Sufficient. Not once again.”
‘Complete halt of the country’ is what the families of the hostages demand.
Netanyahu has promised to keep up the fight until Hamas is eliminated.
He has faced criticism for prioritizing his own interests over the hostages’. An probe of his government’s shortcomings in the attacks on October 7, the fall of the government, and the early elections are probably going to follow the end of the war.
“This feels like an earthquake to me. Just before Sunday’s protests started, Nomi Bar-Yaacov, associate fellow in Chatham House’s International Security Program, stated, “This isn’t just one more step in the war.”
According to Israel’s Channel 12, Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant got into a heated argument during a security Cabinet meeting on Thursday. Gallant accused Netanyahu of putting the lives of the hostages at risk in order to maintain control over a strategically important corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border, which is a major point of contention in the negotiations.
Three of the hostages, Goldberg-Polin, Yerushalmi, and Gat, were supposed to be freed as part of the first round of a cease-fire proposal that was considered in July, according to an Israeli official who verified the claim. The individual spoke under anonymity and was not allowed to inform the media about the conversations.
“In the name of the state of Israel, I hold their families close to my heart and ask forgiveness,” Gallant said on Sunday.
A “complete halt of the country” is what a forum of hostage families has called for in order to press for a cease-fire and the release of the hostages. “Were it not for the delays, sabotage and excuses, those whose deaths we learned about this morning would likely still be alive,” the organization stated in a statement.
Netanyahu and his far-right government would not be immediately in danger, not even from a widespread outburst of rage. He continues to hold a majority in the legislature. However, he has before given in to popular pressure. His controversial judicial makeover was delayed last year due in part to a nationwide strike, and he was forced to rescind the sacking of his defense minister due to widespread protests.
A prominent family’s campaign
The parents of Goldberg-Polin, who immigrated to Israel from the United States, are arguably the most well-known captive relatives on the global scene. They had meetings with Pope Francis and U.S. President Joe Biden. On August 21, they spoke at the Democratic National Convention, to thunderous cheers and calls to “bring him home.”
During the standing ovation, his mother Rachel touched her chest and lowered her head, saying, “Hersh, if you can hear us, we love you, stay strong, survive.”
Sunday, Biden expressed his feelings as “devastated and outraged.” The White House claimed he expressed his sympathies to Goldberg-Polin’s parents during their conversation.
On October 7, about 250 captives were abducted. As of right today, Israel estimates that 101 people are still in captivity, 35 of them are presumed dead. During a cease-fire in November, more than 100 Palestinians who were detained by Israel were released in return. Israeli soldiers have rescued eight people. Three Israelis who had escaped from captivity in December were accidentally slain by Israeli forces.
On October 7, militants led by Hamas overran southern Israel, killing almost 1,200 people, the majority of whom were civilians. Over 40,000 Palestinians have died as a result of Israel’s retaliatory offensive in Gaza, according to local health experts. The number of militant deaths is unknown. The bulk of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been forced to flee, frequently more than once, and the beleaguered region is currently experiencing a humanitarian crisis.
