Doctors across the nation staged a strike and protest at Kartavya Path in New Delhi on August 16, 2024, demanding justice for the woman PG trainee doctor who was tragically raped and murdered in West Bengal.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a rally on 16 August in protest of the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College, demanding capital punishment for the prime suspect in the case. Mass and widespread protests have been asserted from all the medical colleges in the state after this incident erupted.

Later in the same day, the Calcutta High Court appeared worried at the absence of any preventive measures to handle the vandalism at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital that brewed overnight on August 14. The Bench did not seem to buy this argument, saying, “If 7,000 people are to gather, it’s hard to believe the State police did not know. So many people can’t come walking. This is an absolute failure of State machinery.”

The police have so far arrested 25 individuals in the case of the violence at the hospital and vandalism. According to the officials, those arrested were taken into police custody by a city court for remand until August 22.

The vandalism on Thursday was directed at the emergency ward, nursing station, medicine store, and partially of the outpatient department of the hospital. This occurred during the midnight protests organized by women across West Bengal state who were protesting the gruesome rape and killing of the doctor in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9.
