Shikhar Dhawan has declared his retirement from all forms of cricket.
Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has declared his retirement from all formats of the game on Saturday, August 24.
The left-handed player utilized social media to share his emotional announcement. Over the course of his 12-year international career, the 38-year-old participated in 34 Test matches, 167 One Day Internationals, and 68 Twenty20 Internationals, amassing a total of 10,867 runs.
In a video shared on his social media platform, Dhawan expressed, “I find myself at a point in my life where I can only reflect on past memories. It has always been my aspiration to represent India, and that dream has been realized, for which I am deeply thankful to many individuals. My family, my coaches Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma, who taught me the game of cricket, have been instrumental. Additionally, my teammates, who have become like family to me over the years, have played a significant role. I have been blessed with fame, fortune, and the affection of many.”
It is essential to embrace new beginnings in order to progress in life, which is why I am officially announcing my retirement from both international and domestic cricket.
As I wrap up my cricket career, I find a sense of tranquility knowing that I represented my country extensively. I am deeply thankful to all my supporters for their unwavering affection. I remind myself not to dwell on the fact that I will no longer play for India, but rather to celebrate the honor of having done so.
Dhawan made a significant impact on the international stage during the 2004 ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, amassing more than 500 runs, which featured three centuries. He went on to make his debut for India in 2010, playing an ODI against Australia in Visakhapatnam, six years later.
He made his Test debut in March 2013, a remarkable event during which he achieved the fastest Test century on debut, reaching the milestone in just 85 balls.
Dhawan earned a reputation as an ODI specialist, making a significant impact during the 2013 Champions Trophy, where he played a crucial role in India’s title victory and finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 363 runs at an impressive average of 90.75. His remarkable performances continued in subsequent tournaments, including the Asia Cup in 2014, the Cricket World Cup in 2015, the Champions Trophy in 2017, and the Asia Cup in 2018.
He is among the rare eight batters in Men’s ODI history who have achieved over 5000 runs with an average exceeding 40 and a strike rate above 90. The only other Indian players to make this list are Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Dhawan’s most recent appearance in an international match was in 2022 during an ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram. His latest competitive outing occurred in the IPL this year, where he captained the Punjab Kings in April 2024.
