Dolphin attacks prompt beach warnings in Japan

Signs warning that the mammals can “bite you with their sharp teeth and cause you to bleed” and “drag you into the sea, which could be life-threatening” have been put up by the local authorities in the seaside town of Mihama.

Tokyo: Intricate security measures are put in place at some Japanese beaches to keep an eye out for fins. However, dolphins are the real concern for lifeguards and the government, not sharks. And it was just one lonely, sexually frustrated dolphin, not the entire pod. The BBC reports that this creature is to blame for an increase in assaults on swimmers in Wakasa Bay, which is roughly 300 kilometers away from Tokyo. These attacks have hurt up to eighteen persons, one of them was a primary school student who required twenty stitches for injuries to his fingers.

Attacks have escalated in the last few years: there was one in 2022, six the previous year, and 18 so far in 2024.

Moreover, the local authorities are certain that only one dolphin is attacking humans.

“It is reasonable to assume that it is the same individual, as the tail fin wounds are similar to those of the dolphins seen off the coast last year, and it is rare for dolphins, which normally move in groups, to be alone for such a long time,” professor of cetology at Mie University in Japan Tadamichi Morisaka tells Japanese outlet NHK.

Because each dorsal fin has unique ridges, coloration, and notches, it resembles a dolphin’s fingerprint.

In their comments, several specialists have offered theories as to why one dolphin would be responsible for all of these attacks.

“As extremely gregarious creatures, bottlenose dolphins exhibit a great deal of physical sociality. Hormonal changes, sexual frustration, or a desire to dominate can drive a dolphin to harm people it interacts with, just like it can in humans and other social animals. “This can cause serious harm to humans because they are such strong animals,” Dr. Simon Allen, the senior investigator of the Shark Bay Dolphin Research project and a biologist, told the BBC.

The biologist postulated that the dolphin might have been lonely and shunned by its own group.

“In my view, this is primarily a defensive response from humans who approach these dolphins too closely and lack self-awareness,” stated Dr. Matthias Hoffmann-Kuhnt, a marine mammal specialist at the National University of Singapore.

Although they are thought to be fairly amicable toward people, dolphin assaults can be deadly. One event that received widespread media attention occurred in Brazil in 1994 when a dolphin known as Tiao hurt 22 people.
