The former Mesa County, Colorado, clerk, Tina Peters, was found guilty on Monday of manipulating voting machines under her supervision in an unsuccessful effort to demonstrate that the devices had been used to rig the 2020 election against the incumbent, former President Donald J. Trump.

A Grand Junction jury convicted Ms. Peters guilty of seven felonies related to her attempts to hack a Dominion Voting Systems equipment after almost five hours of discussion. According to the jury’s verdict, Ms. Peters assisted an outsider in May 2021 in gaining illegal access to the machine and obtaining material that was then made public at a plot event intended to erode confidence in Mr. Trump’s loss to Joseph R. Biden Jr.

On October 3, Ms. Peters will be sentenced, and she may spend a number of years behind bars.

With Ms. Peters’s conviction—she has gained notoriety among those who contest Mr. Trump’s loss in the most recent presidential election—prosecutors have succeeded in holding a local election official responsible for a security lapse involving a voting system used in 2020 for the first time. It also implies the lengths to which Mr. Trump’s supporters—including those holding public office—went in order to cast doubt on his defeat.

In an attempt to demonstrate that Dominion voting machines had been manipulated to shift votes from Mr. Trump to Mr. Biden, pro-Trump activists attempted to obtain access to these devices in cities around the nation after 2020. When none of such attempts succeeded, local authorities frequently launched investigations.

More lately, there have been worries expressed about the possibility that Mr. Trump’s supporters may try to influence the outcome of the 2024 election. There have been concerns expressed by some supporters of the previous president that partisan authorities might manipulate the certification process by granting discretionary power to local election officials over election certification.

The story of Ms. Peters, 68, began almost immediately and read like a political thriller. Allegations were made that she had concealed plans to hire computer hackers to obtain data from voting machines and had taken on false identities and disguises in an attempt to aid election deniers in infiltrating the Mesa County office in charge of tallying official vote counts.

Based on the suspicion that Dominion machines had manipulated the election six months prior, Ms. Peters invited Conan Hayes, a former professional surfer who is now an expert in technology, to attend what was essentially a regular software update of her county’s voting systems in May 2021.

Evidence presented throughout the trial revealed that Ms. Peters had recognized Mr. Hayes as a county worker posing as Gerald Wood, a tech specialist she had just hired. After gaining access to the voting machine, Mr. Hayes was able to obtain sensitive information about Dominion’s proprietary software and county passwords. Three months later, Mr. Lindell—the founder of the bedding company MyPillow and a well-known propagator of election fraud—hosted an event raising doubts about the election results.

Mr. Lindell is a member of the small but fierce activist group that has promoted the theory that Dominion machines were utilized to rig the election in Mr. Trump’s favor. Pro-Trump attorneys Rudolph W. Giuliani and Sidney Powell have been part of that network over the years, as have affluent businessmen like Patrick Byrne, the former owner of Overstock.com.

After Fox News continuously spread false information alleging that Dominion’s machines had been used to sway votes away from Mr. Trump in an attempt to help Mr. Biden win the presidency, the company vigorously defended itself in court and secured a highly publicized $787.5 million settlement from the network last year. Defamation lawsuits against Mr. Giuliani, Ms. Powell, Mr. Byrne, and Mr. Lindell are also pending at Dominion.

Sherronna Bishop, a far-right activist who goes by the moniker “America’s Mom,” was one of Ms. Peters’s key defense witnesses during the trial. She claimed that two women had attempted to break into the Dominion machine to demonstrate that its internal systems were set up to commit election fraud.

Ms. Bishop acknowledged under oath that she had assisted in transporting Mr. Hayes to Grand Junction from California in order to create a “forensic image” of the interior workings of the machine. Ms. Bishop, who has collaborated with election doubters like as Mr. Lindell on podcasts and videos, admitted that her initiatives in Colorado were a part of a broader national campaign to throw doubt on the reliability of digital voting machines.

Judge Matthew Barrett made an effort to keep the focus of the trial on the facts of Ms. Peters’s actions rather than Dominion conspiracy ideas.

In a recent ruling that rejected the defense’s attempt to call Dominion’s top attorney to testify during the trial, he seemed to lose patience at one point.

Judge Barrett wrote, “The issue herein seems to be a reoccurring theme.” The defendant seeks to raise issues regarding voting machine security, alleged cooperation between Dominion and law enforcement, and similar matters. This court has not yet seen any supporting evidence for the admission of this kind of material.
