On Thursday, the network revealed its plans just moments after Trump announced at a news conference that he had consented to participate in three debates with Harris in September, each airing on different networks.
Trump is making a comeback to the ABC debate just days after he announced on his social media platform that he would skip the event due to a lawsuit he has initiated. This unexpected turn of events creates a buzz in an election cycle that has already seen significant shifts, including Democratic President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race and his endorsement of Harris.
Trump expressed on Thursday, “I believe debates are crucial. I’m eager for the upcoming debates as it’s essential to clarify the facts.”
On the social media site X later on Thursday, Harris wrote that “I hear that Donald Trump has fully committed to debating me on September 10. I look forward to it.”
During a private fundraising event in Paris on Thursday, Doug Emhoff, the husband of Harris, expressed his excitement about seeing his wife debate Trump, stating he “cannot wait” for the moment. He was in the city as the leader of the U.S. delegation for the closing ceremony of the Summer Olympics.
Fox News has suggested a debate featuring Harris and Trump scheduled for September 4, while NBC News is looking to host one on September 25. While in Michigan, Harris expressed her enthusiasm, stating she was “happy to have that conversation” regarding the possibility of an extra debate.
ABC has announced that David Muir and Linsey Davis will be the moderators for the contest on September 10. This date coincides with the second and final debate that Trump and Biden had initially agreed upon, although Biden’s recent decision has cast uncertainty over that event.
The upcoming debate is set to gain significant attention, especially with recent polls indicating a close contest between the former president and the current vice president. Although Harris has generated considerable enthusiasm among Democrats since stepping into her role from Biden, she has not yet participated in a news conference or conducted an interview with any journalists.
Republicans are seizing on this topic. Vance took to X while Trump was holding his news conference on Thursday, claiming that Harris was merely reading from a TelePrompter. He pointed out, “It’s been 18 days since she faced genuine questions from the press.”
