Introducing Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari, the world's heaviest man who shed an astonishing 542kg after receiving an irresistible offer from a Saudi king.
Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari, once recognized as the heaviest man on the planet, achieved a remarkable transformation by losing an incredible 542 kilograms, largely due to the unexpected support of Saudi Arabia’s former King Abdullah. This inspiring journey began when Khalid, who at one point tipped the scales at a staggering 610 kilograms (1,345 pounds) — making him not only the heaviest living person but also the second heaviest in history — sought the assistance he desperately needed and found it from an unlikely ally.
The Intervention of Your Highness.
In 2013, Khalid found himself confined to his bed for more than three arduous years, burdened by his significant weight and relying completely on the assistance of friends and family for his everyday needs. His situation grew increasingly dire, eventually drawing the concern of King Abdullah. Touched by Khalid’s desperate request for assistance, the King orchestrated an extensive and expensive initiative aimed at restoring Khalid’s life. The King’s proposal was straightforward: he would provide Khalid with access to top-tier medical treatment, free of charge, to aid in his recovery.
A specialized group of 30 medical experts was swiftly assembled, and with the help of a forklift and a custom-made bed, Khalid was moved from his residence in the southern city of Jazan to King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh. Upon arrival, he was attended to by a committed team that created a comprehensive treatment plan, integrating both surgical and therapeutic methods.
The Odyssey of Khalid.
Khalid underwent gastric bypass surgery, complemented by a meticulously designed diet and exercise regimen specifically suited to his distinct requirements. If not for the support of some of the leading scientists in the Middle East, the outcomes might have been deemed extraordinary. Remarkably, within a mere six months, Khalid shed almost fifty percent of his body weight. The swift progression of this initial transformation highlighted the comprehensive care he received, which also encompassed rigorous physiotherapy sessions aimed at restoring his previously diminished mobility.
At the conclusion of his journey, as reported in 2023, Khalid had achieved a remarkable weight loss of 542 kilograms, resulting in a healthy weight of 63.5 kilograms (140 pounds). The extent of his physical transformation was so significant that, similar to many individuals who successfully lose substantial amounts of weight, he underwent several surgeries to remove excess skin.
Currently, Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari is endearingly referred to in the region as “The Smiling Man,” a title bestowed upon him by the medical personnel who observed his remarkable journey. Khalid’s narrative serves as both an inspiration and a stark reminder of the substantial financial and logistical resources that are frequently necessary to assist individuals in dire circumstances. The process of weight loss can frequently entail a significant financial burden, and although this individual was fortunate to receive royal support, many others are not as privileged.
