600+ people detained following six days of unrest
After six days of rioting in several regions of England and Northern Ireland, police report that around 400 persons have been taken into custody.
Monday night, police battled turmoil in Birmingham’s east, faced attacks in Plymouth while trying to separate opposing protestors, and had petrol bombs hurled at them in Belfast.
In the UK, during the last week, numerous police officers suffered injuries, while homes, cars, and stores were left in disarray.
It burst the night following last Monday’s knife incident in Southport that claimed the lives of three children. This came after unsubstantiated speculation about a suspect being a Muslim seeking asylum circulated online.
In an effort to curb the violence, the prime minister promised to “ramp up” the law on Monday after denouncing the rioting as “far-right thuggery” over the weekend.
Police in Plymouth reported on Monday night that there had been damage to a police van and a “level of violence” directed against officers.
Devon and Cornwall police stated, “We are taking action against individuals who are intent on criminality.”
Supt. Russ Dawe said that there were “several” injured officers. “Range of public order offences and assaults” were the reasons given for the numerous arrests, he claimed.
Supt. Dawes stated he wished to reassure the community that the force was “fully resourced at this time, with a strong police presence” during a press conference.
In addition, Supt. Dawe said that criminals and those who threaten public order would be “dealt with robustly”.
“Range of public order offences and assaults” were the reasons given for the numerous arrests, he claimed.
On Monday night, there were disturbances in Birmingham as hundreds of people gathered in the city’s Bordesley Green neighborhood in response to rumors that a far-right march was scheduled to take place there.
Chants against the English Defence League could be heard, and Palestinian flags were being waved.
Later, a gang of young people left the group and attacked a pub and multiple cars.
In a statement issued late on Monday, West Midlands Police stated that they were looking into complaints of an attack and damage to a bar.
The police stated: “At this time, no arrests have been made, but there have been isolated incidents. We are looking into reports of an assault, criminal damage to a pub on Stoney Lane, windows broken in a car on Alcombe Grove, Stechford, and additional criminal damage to a car with damaged tires on Belchers Lane, Bordesley Green.”
“We are also investigating reports of a man who was in possession of an offensive weapon.”
“Fortunately, rumors of significant protest activity in the city didn’t materialize,” Ch Supt Richard North continued.
“There were several sporadic incidents of criminality during the evening and we will work hard to arrest those responsible.”
Attacks on PSNI officers occurred in South Belfast when riot units were called to Sandy Row.
It comes after a violent weekend that saw shops destroyed following a citywide anti-immigration march on Saturday.
Stones and at least one petrol bomb were thrown at police on Monday.
Shortly after midnight, the police were stood down.
A week after the attack in Southport, Merseyside, on Monday, large crowds gathered for a vigil to honor the three little girls who lost their lives.
Ten individuals were critically injured in an incident that occurred while Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, were attending a dance class with a Taylor Swift theme.
The yoga instructor Leanne Lucas’s cousin Chris Rimmer, whose dance event was targeted, told the BBC that the riots were “disgusting” and that they should end.
“Why riot, it’s not going to help,” he told the BBC, adding that he would advise rioters to “just stop it.” It is pitiful. Simply return home.
In contrast, he claimed that the support, vigils, flowers, and tributes had given his family “strength” and “a smile” on his face.
Monday’s disturbances in Belfast, Plymouth, and Birmingham followed a day when a few of the first individuals accused of being involved in the riots appeared in UK courts.
Among them were Josh Kellett, 29, of Southcroft, Washington, and Leanne Hodgson, 43, of Holborn Road, Sunderland, who entered guilty pleas to violent disorder in Sunderland at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
At Newcastle Crown Court, Andrew Smith, 41, of Sunderland’s High Street East, confessed to the same offense. Next month, all three will get their sentences.
One of the individuals who also showed up in court on Monday was a 14-year-old kid, following the chaos in Liverpool on Saturday.
In a Liverpool youth court, he entered a guilty plea to violent disorder.
On Monday, Sir Keir declared that in the event of more rioting, a “standing army” of specialized police personnel would be prepared to be called into action.
Following an emergency meeting of the cabinet, Sir Keir declared that the criminal justice system would be “ramped up” and that he wanted the accused to be named “earliest”.
“Whatever the apparent motivation this is not protest this is pure violence and we will not tolerate attacks on mosques or our Muslim communities,” stated the politician.
Sir Keir did not define what a standing army was.
Later, a Downing Street spokesman stated that there were no intentions to include the military.
According to the spokeswoman, the government was collaborating with social media firms to guarantee that false and misleading content was taken down.
The BBC was informed by Neil Basu, the former director of the Metropolitan Police’s counterterrorism branch, that he believed some of the riots to be “serious acts of violence designed to cause terror to a section of our community.”
Some acts, Mr1 Basu said, had “crossed the line into terror,“ in his opinion.
