“Stay safe and strong, Hasina Aunty. Tomorrow is another day. My prayers are with you” — this post on “X” by Sharmishtha Mukherjee, daughter of the former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, not only recalled the close ties between the Mukherjee family and that of Sheikh Hasina but also the last time the latter was in exile, in New Delhi.

It was during this period that then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi took charge of the safety of the surviving members; she put Pranab Mukherjee and his wife Suvra in charge of their care. Ms. Hasina became very close to Suvra, whom she called “boudi”, Bangla for sister-in-law. The common interest in music and poetry bonded the relationship, providing comfort and family to Ms. Hasina at a time when she needed it most—a relationship that has truly stood the test of time since it was formed early.
