In a disappointing turn of events for India at the Olympics, wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification on Wednesday from the 50kg freestyle wrestling category for being slightly overweight, despite qualifying for the gold medal battle.

Vinesh qualified to the quarter-finals after defeating World No. 1 and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan. In the quarter-finals, Vinesh defeated Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5, advancing to the semi-finals. She went on to defeat Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the penultimate bout, winning a medal and becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the Olympic final.

With tremendous regret, the Indian contingent announces Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg race. Despite the team’s diligent efforts all night, she weighed slightly more than 50kg this morning.

“No further comments will be provided by the contingent at this time,” said the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ahead of Phogat’s gold medal match tonight. “The Indian team asks for respect regarding Vinesh’s privacy as they wish to focus on the upcoming competitions,” they added this is not a new circumstance for Phogat, who usually competes in the 53 kg category. She faced a similar problem at the Olympic qualifiers, where she just barely made it.

The Indian government is in contact with IOA President PT Usha to discuss possibilities for Vinesh’s case.
