US and Canada Hours before Joe Biden's speech, fighter jets intercept planes from China and Russia near Alaska.
(Mrsinghtv) — According to a US defense official, the North American Aerospace Defense Command caught two Chinese and two Russian bombers flying close to Alaska on Wednesday, marking the first time the two nations had been intercepted while cooperating.
The bombers were “not seen as a threat,” according to a NORAD statement, and they continued to fly in international airspace within Alaska‘s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
The Chinese H-6 aircraft and the Russian TU–95 Bear were intercepted by the US and Canada, who collectively make up NORAD. According to NORAD, the plane did not enter sovereign airspace of the US or Canada.
According to the defense official, it’s also the first time H-6 bombers, which are derived from earlier Soviet bombers, have penetrated the Alaska ADIZ.
The defense official stated that US F-16 and F-35 fighter jets along with Canadian CF-18 fighter jets conducted the intercept. According to the official, the intercept included support aircraft as well.
It is not unusual for Russian planes to fly into Alaska’s AdIZ. Russia brought four planes into Alaska’s Area of Concern (ADIZ) in May; NORAD stated at the time that this “occurs regularly.”
However, the aircraft from China seem to be a recent addition. General Gregory Guillot, the commander of US Northern Command, stated in March that he anticipated seeing aircraft in the Arctic “as soon as this year potentially” due to China’s continued drive northward.
“I have observed that the Chinese are willing and eager to take action up there,” Guillot stated before a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing. They are visible in the maritime. Although they have been observed in the context of technical or scientific study, we believe they have multiple missions, including military ones. And eventually, possibly as soon as this year, I anticipate seeing aviation activity in the Alaskan portion of the Arctic.
He declared, “It is a very big concern of mine.”
China, which views itself as a “near-Arctic” state, has made efforts, including working with Russia, to increase its influence in the far north.
