Fernando and Mendis lead Sri Lanka to a total of 248 runs in Sri Lanka vs India ODI Series.
Sri Lanka vs India ODI series
Sri Lanka is on the verge of securing their first ODI series victory over India in almost thirty years, with a target of 249 in sight. Avishka Fernando’s impressive 96 has set the stage for a thrilling challenge against India on another dry pitch at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. It’s worth mentioning that India struggled to chase down targets of 231 and 241 in the opening two ODIs.
Choosing to bat first for the third consecutive match, openers Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando provided Sri Lanka with a strong foundation, putting together an impressive 89-run partnership. True to form, Nissanka took the initiative early on, striking four boundaries within the first few overs bowled by Mohammed Siraj, who was notably India’s only fast bowler in this encounter.
The visitors opted to leave out Arshdeep Singh, bringing in Riyan Parag for his ODI debut to bolster their middle-order batting following two previous collapses. Additionally, Rishabh Pant stepped in for KL Rahul, marking another adjustment made by the team.
Axar Patel was the one who dismissed Nissanka with a well-placed top-edged slog-sweep, breaking the opening partnership in the 20th over. Following that, a strong partnership developed, with Fernando taking the lead and scoring an impressive half-century off 65 balls. His performance against the spinners was particularly noteworthy, especially after a slow start against the fast bowlers.
However, when Siraj returned for his second spell, Fernando unleashed his aggression, hitting a boundary and two sixes within just five deliveries. He seemed poised for a well-earned century but fell victim to a full legbreak from Riyan Parag, giving the debutant his first ODI wicket.
Parag quickly claimed the wicket of Charith Asalanka (lbw), sparking a dramatic downturn for Sri Lanka, who slipped from a comfortable 171/1 to a precarious 199/6 as Washington Sundar and Siraj made vital contributions with the ball. Parag concluded his spell with three wickets, including Dunith Wellalage (bowled), playing a key role in India’s control during the latter stages of the middle overs.
However, similar to the previous two ODIs, Sri Lanka found a hero in the closing moments, with Kusal Mendis stepping up this time. The No.3 batsman reached his fifty off 77 deliveries, aiding his team in adding 31 runs in the last three overs, a crucial period that once again propelled Sri Lanka to a formidable total on a challenging pitch.
