Kolkata rape-murder case: Union Minister urges states to prioritize doctors' safety -Aug 17, 2024

Hundreds of women took part in a massive procession on Sunday night in Kolkata and various parts of West Bengal. An angry echo of the “Reclaim the Night” campaign followed with continued demands for justice over the alleged rape-cum-murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Women from all walks of life converged to Jadavpur, Garia, Behala Parnashree, Khanna, and Lake Town areas, raising slogans, “We want justice.” In spite of intermittent rains, there were famous faces from Bengali cinema—directors Arindam Sil and Kaushik Ganguly, actress Churni Ganguly—who came out and led protests for justice for the victim.

In Delhi, members of the resident doctors’ association took out a candlelight march and interacted with the public to raise awareness about the issue.

With pressure mounting over its handling of the case, the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal came under fire from the victim’s parents, who condemned alleged attempts to stifle the public outcry, even as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to the streets to publicly decry the crime.

A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is now handling the probe following an order by the Calcutta High Court, on Saturday carried out 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and conducted psychological testing of the main accused.
