India defeats Spain 2-1 in Paris 2024 to capture a historic bronze medal. Harmanpreet and Sreejesh shine.
India won successive hockey gold at the Olympics for the first time since 1952 thanks to two goals from captain Harmanpreet Singh and several vital saves by PR Dreejesh.
India has ended a four-decade-long curse by taking home the bronze in the Olympics in Tokyo. It reaffirmed its standing as one of the best teams in the world of hockey in Paris on Thursday, three years after winning its third straight bronze medal at the Olympics in the legendary Yves du Manoir Stadium.
In an exciting encounter played in the sweltering afternoon sun, India—who had just switched to coach Craig Fulton three months before the Asian Games last year and had hastily adopted a defense-first philosophy—came back to defeat a resolute Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal game.
The last time it took home consecutive Olympic medals was in Munich in 1972.

PR Sreejesh, who concluded his illustrious two-decade international career, representing India with distinction, and deserving of every bit of the fantasy swansong, had a fitting departure with his fourth bronze and 13th Olympic medal.
The Indian team’s goal was evident from the start of the competition, and they maintained it and reached their full potential. The squad made tremendous progress during the competition.
The first quarter saw neither team break through as the midfielders remained active and made plays to challenge the opposing team’s defense.
But the second phase was even more action-packed, with Spain demonstrating a greater desire to attack the Indian fortress from all directions.
When Pepe Clapes was tackled inside the Indian circle and given a penalty shot, it took the lead. Captain Marc Miralles completely outclassed Sreejesh with a shot to the upper right corner.
India maintained its post safety despite Spain earning three penalty corners thanks to the comeback of rusher Amit Rohidas. When Clapes threw in a cross from the left, Spain almost doubled their lead, but Borja Lacalle was unable to connect it in front of the goal.
After more end-to-end play, India took charge again and earned two short corners. At the end of the half, Harmanpreet Singh’s quick and low drag-flick enabled his side to tie the score.
In the penultimate quarter, India took the lead early. Harmanpreet’s outstanding conversion on a penalty corner earned his team’s second goal.

On goalkeeper Luis Calzado’s right, down the carpet, the drag-flicker found a gap in the Spanish defense by delaying his shot a little and using his wrists.
The Indians picked up three more short corners in a number of occasions thanks to their exquisite cooperation, while Spain’s hardworking players managed two more.
