Hints, Spangram, and Solutions for Saturday, August 17th in the NYT
Searching for solutions, spangrams, and hints for Friday’s Strands? Here’s where you may locate them:
Hi there, Strandistas! I’ve returned to assist you with your weekly Strands, replacing my colleague Paul Tassi. I’ve been taking control of this column for a few weeks now, and I’m glad to be back, especially after enjoying the puzzle so much today.
The newest puzzle game in the New York Times library is called Strands. It’s a humorous take on traditional word search games. We are tasked with finding every word on the grid that fits the theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board, each day after we are given a new theme. Shall we solve the one for today?
What Is the Strands Hint for Today?
Take your time scrolling! I’ll disclose the answer words for today’s Strands problem right after the clue.
Carle classic is the official theme suggestion for today’s Strand puzzle.
Here’s one more thematic hint to help you figure out the answer: A children’s book on hunger.

The Spangram for Today
I’ll give you today’s Spangram and show you where it is on the grid before we list every word.
This concludes the spoiler alert for you!
The Strands spangram for today is…
HUGGLYCATERPILLAR
The Spangram can be found where it is on the grid:
Today’s Breakdown of Strands
This was a good read; it reminded me of the good old days when my kids were little and we used to read novels like Where the Wild Things Are, Goodnight Moon, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The spangram and WATERMELON both seem to almost loop around the center of this grid, which is another visually appealing aspect I appreciate. Finding LEAF immediately after discovering PILLAR helped me understand what Carle classic means. Upon seeing LEAF, I quickly realized that PILLAR was a member of CATERPILLAR. When that failed, I went in search of HUNGRY and combined the two. After that, WATERMELON was really simple to figure out, and the remaining words were also rather simple.
