S Jaishankar on Bangladesh crisis: "Attack on minorities and temples, closlely monitoring situations"
S Jaishankar on Bangladesh crisis told Rajya Sabha on Tuesday meeting that, “ Our understating is that after a meeting with leaders of security establishments PM Sheikh Hasina apparently made the decision to resign, At a very short notice, she requested approval to come for the moment to India. She arrived in Delhi yesterday evening.
While sharing the details that leading up to havoc situation, He also said that since the election in January 2024, there had been considerable tension, deep dives, and growing polarisation in Bangladesh politics. ” This underlying foundation aggravated a student agitation that started in June 2024. There was constantly growing violence including attacks on public buildings, and infrastructure as well as traffic and rail obstruction.”
“Throughout this period, we repeatedly counseled restraint and urged that the situation be diffused through dialogue. So despite a Supreme Court judgement on 21 July, there was no let up in the public agitation. various decisions and actions taken thereafter only exacerbated the situation. The agitation at this stage coalesced around a one-point agenda that the PM Sheikh Hasina should step down”.
S Jaishankar showed his concern for minorities in Bangladesh said, there businesses and temples coming under attack at multiple location.
An ISKCON temple in Meherpur, in Bangladesh’s Khulna division, was set on fire by protester on Monday. S Jaishankar also said that the Indian government is in close and constant touch with the Indian community in Bangladesh. There are an estimated 19000 Indian nationals of them 9000 are students. However, the bulk of students have already returned in India in the month of July 2024.
The External Affairs minister, S Jaishankar closed his statement by once again being concerned about the minorities status and said, Indian government is closely monitoring and ” There are various reports of initiatives by various groups and organization to ensure their protection and well-being. We welcome that, but will naturally remain deeply concerned till law and order is visibly restored.”
