Reaction to Trump's scheduled speech at the Black Journalists Convention
The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) in Chicago will host a speech by former president Donald Trump on Wednesday, drawing immediate criticism from the journalistic community.
NABJ co-chair and Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah made the following announcement at the convention, stating on X: “I hope all the journalists who are interviewing Trump have the best possible luck. I’m excited to meet and catch up with each and every one of you in the Windy City, everyone else.
According to her statement, a “variety of factors” affected her choice, and she was not involved “in any way with the decision to platform Trump in such a format.”
Due to his racist remarks and stances, Trump’s past with the press media and Black people in general has come under investigation.
Apart from general assaults on the media, such as labeling negative coverage as “fake news” and inciting protestors to shout anti-media slogans, he has targeted Black female reporters in particular.
As NABJ gives a platform to Trump, I would hope they ask him about the many times he attacked Black journalists like Yamiche Alcindor, April Ryan, and Don Lemon. But Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner is on the panel, and she has shown herself to be in the tank for Trump. pic.twitter.com/J5D7meLfWU

Commenters on NABJ’s X post announcing the panel—which will be moderated by Rachel Scott of ABC News, Harris Faulkner of Fox News, and Kadia Goba of Semafor—voiced their displeasure that Trump had been invited to speak at the distinguished journalistic convention.
Two-time NABJ award-winning journalist Carron Phillips commented on X, “Y’all just made the only safe haven that Black journalists have, potentially unsafe, all because y’all want to look’smarter than everybody else,’ when this is…idiotic at best.”
The 2023 NABJ journalist of the year, Jim Trotter, commented on the decision, saying, “It’s hard to put into words how terrible this is for @NABJ.”
The Grio’s April Ryan, a White House journalist that Trump had frequently targeted while in power, likewise voiced her displeasure with the decision.
“The accounts of the then-president of the United States attacking Black women White House correspondents are not fiction or supposition, but fact,” Ryan stated. “It is an insult to what this organization stands for and a slap in the face to the Black women journalists (NABJ journalists of the year) who had to defend themselves from the wrath of this Republican presidential nominee to have a presumed staged session with the former president.”
“I object to this NABJ session with Donald Trump in Chicago,” she said.
In 2017, Ryan won the title of NABJ Journalist of the Year.
Others questioned Fox News’ Faulkner’s choice to co-moderate the discussion, pointing out her close ties to the outgoing president.
I’m in West Palm Beach, Florida.Spent the day at Mar a Lago with President Trump. Was with him minutes before he left for Pennsylvania. He was so excited to go see voters in Butler, PA. He joked and told me our extended interview “will be a ratings grabber— please play it for the… pic.twitter.com/pAtw5kXAQt

However, Tia Mitchell, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Washington writer, supported the choice to invite the Republican presidential contender.
“I was involved in this call. Additionally, it corresponds with the decades-long invites NABJ has extended to each presidential contender,” Mitchell stated. “However, keep ranting on your feed. I’ll keep trying to make it possible for reporters to speak with the prospective next president.”
Mitchell decided to make her X account private in response to the criticism she received for the choice.
Every four years, NABJ invites potential presidential candidates to speak at the conference; Trump had already said he would not be attending.
However, Trump has intensified his efforts to win over Black voters in light of the challenging and historic contest he faces against Vice President Harris, who would become the first elected Black woman.
The campaign said in a statement that Trump has “accomplished more for Black Americans than any other president in recent history” and that he would be attending the journalists conference.
According to a person familiar with the discussions, Harris was also invited, but he will not be able to attend for scheduling conflicts, Asma Khalid of NPR has learned.
The source stated that Harris values the work of the organization and of Black reporters and would keep the door open to other options to address the group. “Unfortunately, the NABJ team denied a request for the VP to take part in a fireside chat virtually, or to host an in-person fireside chat with the VP at a later date,“ the source said.
