Independence Day LIVE: Punishment given for crimes against women should be publicized, says PM Modi
The VIPs included the Indian contingent that took part in the Paris Olympics, student beneficiaries from Atal Innovation Mission, Border Roads Organisation workers, and sarpanches among the 6,000 special guests at the 78th Independence Day celebrations in New Delhi on Thursday, August 15, 2024.
For the 11th time in a row, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the national flag from the Red Fort. Multi-layered security has been put in place across India and over 10,000 police personnel, facial recognition cameras, and snipers have been deployed in Delhi. For the first time, security camps were set up in 13 villages in Chhattisgarh’s Naxal-affected Bastar region where the Tricolour will be hoisted to mark the occasion of Independence Day.
PM Narendra Modi said on Thursday that the punishments for crimes against women should be publicised, so that the idea of consequence is instilled. Addressing the country from the Red Fort ramparts on the 78th anniversary of Independence, Modi said that while his government was focused on a “women-led development model”, he was deeply concerned about the continuing incidents of rape and violence. He said that he understood the anger among the people over such heinous acts.
The Prime Minister said the government is very serious about the recent incidents and claimed that “There is a rising sense of anger among the people.” Then, he returned to tout his government’s philosophy of women-driven development, mentioning, “Women are making strides in every sector—innovation, employment, entrepreneurship, or defense. Their strength is seen across the Air Force, army, navy, or space sectors. But some very disturbing incidents continue to come to the fore.”
“Today, I am sharing my pain from the Red Fort. Our society should take it seriously so that an end to the atrocities against mothers, sisters, and daughters can be brought about. Anger is there in the eyes of every citizen, and I share that anger,” he said.
He said that such incidents needed to be taken seriously, and a strong message was required to be forwarded to the perpetrator. “Crimes against women should be investigated in a fast manner, and severe punishment needs to be levied for those who commit heinous crimes. Confidence building must be instilled within society.”
He further stressed the need to spread general awareness among the public about the consequences of such crimes, saying, “We must widely publicize the punishments for atrocities against women to create a deterrent effect. Those committing such heinous acts should know they will face the harshest penalties. It is essential to instill that fear
