Olympic boxer Imane Khelif addresses the backlash she faced after undergoing a gender test, sharing her thoughts on the hateful criticism that ensued.

Imane Khelif faces backlash amid allegations from Russia-influenced International Boxing Association, which has been banned from the Olympics.

Olympic boxer Imane Khelif expressed that the barrage of hateful criticism stemming from misunderstandings about her gender “undermines human dignity.” She urged for a cessation of bullying towards athletes, highlighting the significant impact the global backlash has had on her.

During an interview with SNTV, a sports video partner of The Associated Press, the Algerian athlete shared insights into her challenging Olympic journey on Sunday night.

Imane Khelif expressed a heartfelt message to everyone around the globe, urging them to embrace the values of the Olympics and respect the Olympic Charter. He emphasized the importance of standing against bullying directed at athletes, highlighting its profound consequences. “Bullying can devastate individuals, stifle their creativity, and harm their spirit,” he stated in Arabic. “It can create divisions among us. Therefore, I implore everyone to put an end to bullying.”

The triumphs of Imane Khelif and her compatriot Lin Yu-ting from Taiwan in the boxing arena in Paris have emerged as one of the most captivating narratives of the Paris Games. Both athletes have secured their inaugural Olympic medals, all while enduring online harassment fueled by unfounded allegations regarding their gender. This situation has thrust them into a broader conversation about evolving perspectives on gender identity and the regulations surrounding sports.

At just 25 years old, Imane Khelif recognized the immense pressure and emotional strain of facing this challenge while competing away from home in the most significant event of her sports career.

“I connect with my family twice a week. I really hope they haven’t been too deeply impacted,” she expressed. “They have concerns about my well-being. If all goes well, this crisis could lead to a gold medal, and that would be the perfect outcome.”

The relationship between the International Boxing Association and the Olympic Games throughout history.

The animosity arises from allegations made by the Russian-led International Boxing Association, which has been permanently excluded from the Olympics, asserting that both Imane Khelif and Lin did not pass certain undisclosed eligibility tests for the women’s event at the world championships held last year.

When questioned about whether she had taken any tests aside from doping tests, Imane Khelif chose not to respond, expressing her reluctance to discuss the matter.

She conveyed her appreciation to the International Olympic Committee and its president, Thomas Bach, for their unwavering support during the controversy stirred up by the disbanded former governing body of Olympic boxing regarding her involvement in the Paris Games.

She expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I believe the Olympic Committee has righted the wrongs done to me, and this resolution brings me joy as it reflects the truth.”

She has garnered tremendous support during her matches, receiving enthusiastic cheers as she steps into the arena, with crowds waving Algerian flags and chanting her first name. Her next fight is scheduled for Tuesday in the women’s 66-kilogram semifinals at Roland Garros.

Imane Khelif has consistently emphasized that she will not let gossip or allegations distract her from her goal of securing Algeria’s inaugural Olympic gold medal in women’s boxing.

Imane Khelif expressed his indifference to others’ opinions the day after his victory over Anna Luca Hamori from Hungary. “My focus is solely on winning a medal,” he stated. “I’m here to compete and strive for that medal. I aim to enhance my performance and, with God’s help, I will continue to grow, just like every other athlete.”

While Khelif acknowledges the global conversation surrounding her, she mentioned that she has felt somewhat detached from it all.

“To be honest, I steer clear of social media,” she explained. “Our mental health team advises against it, particularly during the Olympic Games, for both myself and my fellow athletes. My focus is on competing and achieving a great outcome.”

Imane Khelif kicked off her Olympic journey last Thursday with a swift win against Italy’s Angela Carini, who had to withdraw from the match after only 46 seconds. Carini later expressed her regret over the choice and extended an apology to Khelif.

The unexpected conclusion sparked a frenzy of discussion about Khelif, with voices rising to a crescendo. Notable figures, including former U.S. President Donald Trump and “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, joined the fray, mistakenly asserting that Khelif was either a man or transgender.

The IOC has consistently affirmed that both she and Lin are eligible to compete in the Olympics. Additionally, it has criticized the unclear testing protocols and lack of transparency in the IBA’s governance, which faced an extraordinary sanction last year by being completely excluded from the Olympic Games.

Imane Khelif was acutely aware of the global attention focused on her, and her triumph over Hamori on Saturday seemed to provide a much-needed release. Once the referee declared her the winner, she made her way to the center of the ring, greeted her supporters with a wave, knelt down, and struck the canvas with her palm, her joyful expression giving way to tears.

Imane Khelif expressed during the interview, “I found it hard to manage my nerves. Following the media whirlwind and our win, I felt a blend of happiness, but I was also deeply impacted. To be honest, it was a challenging experience, one that truly undermines human dignity.”

What led to Imane Khelif's suspension by the IBA?

For several years, she participated in IBA events without any issues, but her journey took a sudden turn when she was unexpectedly suspended from last year’s world championships. The organization, heavily influenced by Russian leadership and known for its ongoing disputes with the IOC, has remained tight-lipped about the testing results.

Algeria’s national boxing federation continues to be a member of the IBA.

Imane Khelif hails from the picturesque rural areas of northwestern Algeria, where her childhood was filled with soccer games. However, her passion took a turn when she discovered boxing. Despite her father’s early resistance, she made the journey of 10 kilometers (approximately 6 miles) by bus to pursue her training in a nearby town.

Imane Khelif is set to face Janjaem Suwannapheng from Thailand in her upcoming match in Paris. A victory for Khelif would secure her a spot in the gold medal fight on Friday.

“Absolutely, this matter touches on the dignity and respect of all women,” she stated in a short interview with an Algerian broadcaster following her victory over Hamori. “The Arab community has been familiar with me for many years and has witnessed my journey in the IBA, where I faced injustice and unfair treatment, but I stand strong with God by my side.”
