July 21st, 2024, will be dedicated to celebrating Guru Purnima. On this auspicious day, people give thanks to “gurus,” or spiritual and intellectual instructors, who share their knowledge and wisdom. In the Hindu month of Ashadha, the celebration takes place on the day of the full moon, or Purnima. In the past, Maharishi Vyasa—the author of the Mahabharata and a highly esteemed elder in Hinduism—was honored on Guru Purnima.
In Hindu mythology, this day marks the birth of Vyasa, and it is thought that on this auspicious day he started the process of composing the epic. It is hence also referred to as Vyasa Purnima.
