Brazilian officials are looking into the reasons behind the devastating plane crash that resulted in the loss of 61 lives.

A tragic plane crash occurred in São Paulo state on Friday, involving a Voepass ATR 72, resulting in the loss of all 61 individuals aboard. The aircraft was headed to Guarulhos International Airport when it went down in Vinhedo, leaving behind a burnt wreck and no reported injuries on the ground. Brazilian officials are currently probing the incident as rescue teams work to recover the bodies in challenging winter weather.

On Saturday, Brazilian officials were busy investigating the cause of the plane crash in Sao Paulo state that occurred the day before, resulting in the tragic loss of all 61 individuals on board.

A Voepass aircraft, an ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop, was en route to São Paulo’s international airport in Guarulhos, carrying 57 passengers and 4 crew members, when it tragically crashed in the city of Vinhedo.

Witnesses captured images of the aircraft spiraling in a flat spin and descending straight down before crashing into a gated community, resulting in a completely destroyed fuselage engulfed in flames. Residents reported that there were no injuries among those on the ground.

Light rain fell on the rescue teams as they began to retrieve the initial bodies from the site, feeling the bite of winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Meanwhile, a few residents of the condominium quietly chose to find shelter for the night elsewhere.

This incident marked the most catastrophic airline disaster globally since January 2023, when a Yeti Airlines flight in Nepal tragically went down, resulting in the loss of 72 lives during its landing approach due to a stall. That aircraft was also an ATR 72, and the concluding report attributed the crash to pilot error.

A report released on Friday by Globo, a Brazilian television network, indicated that their meteorological center has “confirmed the possibility of ice formation in the Vinhedo area.” Local news outlets have also referenced experts who suggest that icing could be a contributing factor to the crash.

On October 31, 1994, an American Eagle ATR 72-200 tragically crashed, leading the United States National Transportation Safety Board to conclude that ice accumulation during a holding pattern was the likely cause. The aircraft lost control at approximately 8,000 feet, plunging to the ground and resulting in the loss of all 68 individuals aboard. In response, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration implemented new operating guidelines for ATRs and comparable aircraft, advising pilots against using autopilot in icy conditions.

Brazilian aviation specialist Lito Sousa warned that the weather conditions by themselves may not fully account for the way the plane crashed on Friday.

Sousa explained to the AP over the phone, “Relying solely on images to analyze an air crash can result in inaccurate conclusions regarding its causes. However, we can observe a plane that has lost support and lacks horizontal speed. In this state of a flat spin, regaining control of the aircraft is impossible.”

During a press conference on Friday in Vinhedo, Sao Paulo’s Public Security Secretary Guilherme Derrite announced that the black box from the plane has been successfully retrieved and appears to be in good condition.

Marcelo Moura, the operations director at Voepass, informed reporters on Friday evening that although there were predictions of ice, the expected amounts were within safe limits for the aircraft.

Similarly, Lt. Col. Carlos Henrique Baldi from the Brazilian Air Force’s Center for Investigation and Prevention of Air Accidents informed reporters during a late afternoon press conference that it remains premature to determine if ice was a factor in the crash.

Baldi, who leads the investigation division at the center, stated, “The aircraft is approved in multiple countries to operate in extreme icing conditions, including nations where the effects of ice are more pronounced than in our own.”

Previously, the center indicated that the pilots of the aircraft did not request assistance or report any challenging weather conditions. Additionally, there is no indication that the pilots attempted to reach out to the controllers at nearby airports, as stated by Ports and Airports Minister Silvio Costa Filho during a press briefing on Friday evening in Vinhedo.

Brazil’s Federal Police announced the launch of an investigation, sending in experts in aviation accidents and victim identification, according to a statement released.

ATR, the French-Italian aircraft manufacturer, announced that it has received information regarding an accident involving its ATR 72-500 model. The company stated that its specialists are actively involved in supporting both the investigation and the affected customer.

The ATR 72 is typically utilized for shorter journeys. These aircraft are manufactured through a collaboration between Airbus in France and Leonardo S.p.A. from Italy.

Since the 1990s, incidents involving different models of the ATR 72 have led to a tragic total of 470 fatalities, as reported by the Aviation Safety Network’s database.

On Friday, Brazilian officials started moving the bodies to the morgue and urged the families of the victims to provide any medical records, X-rays, and dental examinations to assist in identifying the deceased. Additionally, blood tests were conducted to aid in the identification process.

Costa Filho, the minister of airports, announced that the air force’s center will also carry out a criminal investigation into the accident.

He stated, “We will conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that the Brazilian people receive a complete understanding of this case.”
