The first Indian prime leader to visit the country in more than 40 years, Mr. Modi landed here on Tuesday evening after traveling from Moscow for two days.
Alexander Schallenberg, the foreign minister of Austria, greeted Mr. Modi at the airport.
Mr. Modi and Mr. Nehammer had a private meeting on Tuesday. “A significant turning point in the alliance between Austria and India! Austrian Chancellor @karlnehammer invited PM @narendramodi to a private engagement. The two leaders are meeting for the first time. Along with images of the two leaders together in Vienna, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on X, “Discussions on realizing the full potential of bilateral partnership lie ahead.”
In one of the images, Mr. Modi was seen giving Mr. Nehammer a hug, while in another, the prime minister and the chancellor of Austria were seen taking a selfie.
On the microblogging network, Mr. Nehammer shared a picture of himself with PM @narendramodi with the caption, “Welcome to Vienna, PM! It is a joy and an honor to have you visit Austria. India and Austria are allies and collaborators. I’m excited for our conversations about politics and economy when you visit!” The prime minister expressed gratitude to the chancellor of Austria “for the warm welcome” and expressed excitement for “our discussions tomorrow as well.” Our countries will keep collaborating to advance world welfare.
Mr. Modi added, “Happy to meet you in Vienna, Chancellor @karlnehammer,” in another tweet on X. The friendship between Austria and India is solid and will only grow stronger in the future.” Since Indira Gandhi’s 1983 visit, there hasn’t been an Indian prime minister visited Austria in over 40 years.
The two nations will discuss how to strengthen their ties and work together more closely on a range of geopolitical issues while Mr. Modi is in Austria.
The Prime Minister had earlier stated on X: “Arrived in Vienna. This trip to Austria is unlike any other. Our shared commitment to a healthier planet and our shared ideals bind our nations together. Anticipating the several events in Austria, such as conversations with Chancellor @karlnehammer, engagements with the Indian community, and further events.” The MEA spokesperson stated, “This historic visit will add renewed momentum to India-Austria ties as the two countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year,” in an earlier post on X. Artists from Austria greeted Mr. Modi with a performance of Vande Mataram. Leader of the orchestra and chorus was Vijay Upadhyaya.
On Wednesday, Mr. Modi will speak with Nehammer and pay a visit to Alexander Van der Bellen, the President of the Republic of Austria.
Business leaders from Austria and India will also hear speeches from the chancellor and the prime minister.
Prior to his trip to Austria, Mr. Modi stated on Sunday that the two nations will continue to forge an ever-closer friendship based on their common principles of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.
